“Polly Campbell,” an older lady walked into the room and looked around. She had large owl-rimmed glasses on her face and a stack of files in her hand.
“That’s me.” I spoke up as I grabbed my cup.
“Please come with me.”
“Oh?” I frowned as I looked over at Natasha. Was I being fired?
“Mr. Whitlock has some projects for you.”
“But we’re still in the conference room.” I was confused. Was everyone being given projects now? Or was this some sort of test?
“Yes, the others will go back to the conference room, but because you’re not a law student yet, he felt you should have some other duties.” She continued. “To see if you really want to attend law school.”
“Hmm, okay.” I frowned. Had this always been the plan or had Max just created it. “You want me to come with you now?”
“Yes, please.” She sounded impatient. “And you’ll need to drink that coffee up and finish it now.”
“Oh?”
“You’re not allowed beverages in the file room.”
“In the file room?” I raised an eyebrow as I hurriedly sipped my surprisingly tasty beverage.
“Yes, that’s where you’ll be filing these files.” She slammed them on the table next to me. “Finish that drink and pick up the files and follow me, I don’t have all day.”
“Yes, Miss…” I paused and waited for her to give me her name.
“Edith Fraiser.” She stared at me. “I’m one of the paralegals that works on cases with Mr. Whitlock.”
“Oh ok, I just don’t understand why–.”
“Let’s go.” She snapped and started walking out of the room. I looked back at Natasha, whose eyes were wide and surprised and I just shrugged as I grabbed the heavy stack of folders and hurried out of the room behind Edith. We walked down the long corridor and then rounded a corner. I was hoping this was some sort of weird first day initiation prank or joke and that everyone would jump out of a room and be like, “Gotcha, of course you’re not going to be filing folders,” but no-one ever jumped out. Edith opened a door that led to a stairwell and stopped for a second. We’re going down to the file room, but others at the office call it the dungeon.” She sighed. “The elevator doesn’t go down there so we will take the steps.”
“Let me get this straight…I’m working in a room called the dungeon?” I asked softly, as I tried not to trip over my own two feet as I made my way down the staircase.
“It’s the file room.”
“But you said others call it the dungeon.”
“But it’s a file room.” She sounded annoyed. “Too many of the workers here take this job for granted. I can remember in 2001, when I was looking for a Job and the economy had crashed that…”
I decided to tune Edith out as I followed her down towards the dungeon. I was pissed and I was going to let my sisters know that they needed to make this up to me big time. I couldn’t believe I was missing out on a beach day at Siesta Key for this crap. I couldn’t believe that I was wearing a thousand-dollar suit to work in a dungeon. I coulda just worn my $5 sweatpants that I’d gotten from Old Navy that were slightly too tight instead.
“I take it, you do know how to alphabetize.” Edith asked me as we entered a dark, musty and humid room. All I could see was shelves stacked with files and what seemed like hundreds of filing cabinets.
“A b c d e f g h I j k…” I started singing and stopped as I realized we weren’t in the room alone.
“Thank you Edith,” Max spoke in a light voice, though I could hear the tenseness in his tone. “I will take it from here.”
“I don’t mind explaining the ropes to Polly, Mr. Whitlock,” She said eagerly as she looked over at him adoringly. Did prissy Edith have a crush on Max? Made sense that the wicked witch of Chandler and Whitlock would have a crush on the spawn of satan.
“I will take it from here, Edith.” He said. “Why don’t you work on the continuance for the Morton case…I would like something in my inbox by 4 pm.”
“Yes, Mr. Whitlock.” She sounded defeated as she left the room, without even a goodbye to me. Biatch.
I waited for the door to close before I placed the folders on a large wooden desk and then marched over to Max with my arms crossed and what felt like fiery flames flashing from my nostrils. I was pissed.
“What the hell?” I stopped in front of Max and glared at him. “I’m not here to do your dirty work.”
“Did I ask you to clean my car?” His upper lip twitched slightly.
“I’m not here to file folders.”
“You’re here to get work experience.”
“Not this kind of experience.” I shook my head vehemently.
“What kind of experience did you want?” He looked me up and down and raised an eyebrow at me.
“What sort of loaded question is that?”
“Were you hoping to be on your feet, your ass, or your knees?”
“What?” I blinked at him in confusion and then my jaw dropped. “What are you trying to say?”
“What do you think I’m trying to say?”
“I don’t know, that’s why I’m asking you?” I was fuming now. “What sort of position in a law firm would have be on my knees huh?” My voice grew louder. “Are you suggesting I give you a blow job?” I involuntarily looked down at his dark gray slacks and just to ignore the silhouette I saw pressed against his pants. Was he growing hard? And if he was, was his manhood really that big?
“Get your mind out of the gutter, Ms. Campbell.” He folded his arms. “I was talking about being a cleaner. You would be on your knees if you were scrubbing the floor.”
“Hmmm…” I didn’t really know how to respond to that. “Obviously I don’t want to be a cleaner. Why would I be contemplating law school if I wanted to be a cleaner?”
“Because it pays better than selling girl scout cookies?” He smirked. “Don’t think I didn’t notice how you tried to strum up business this morning.”
“What?” My jaw dropped. “What are you talking about?”
“I’m talking about how you were trying to solicit business and sales for your cookies.”
“Say what?” I took a deep breath. “I was just saying I wish I’d brought cookies, jackass.”
“And then I saw you flirting with Travis. Is your goal to seduce my business partner so you don’t have to work. Hoping to get that MRS degree?”
“What?” If he continued I was going to slap him.
“Were you or were you not giving him the eye?”
“I have a boyfriend, thank you very much.” I retorted. It was a lie, but a needed one. Because the fact of the manner was, I had been stripping Travis with my eyes and obviously Max had seen that.
“You have a boyfriend?” He looked taken aback and surprised.
“Yes,” I gave him my most winning smile. “We just banged this morning in fact, so no I have no wish to flirt or come on to Travis or anyone else at this firm.”
“You banged this morning?” His eyes narrowed and his lips thinned.
“Yes…a good luck on your first day of work bang. I can barely walk right now.” I lied as I stared at him. He looked pissed and I held back a smile. Typical man. “My boyfriend is packing…like 9 inches…sometimes I think that–.”
“Are you always this impertinent?”
“If you consider being honest impertinent, then yes.” I wanted to laugh at the irony of my response. I hadn’t said an honest word in the last couple of minutes.
“If you want to become an attorney then you will have to learn to keep certain things to yourself.” His voice was stiff now. “I know you got this gig because Travis and Finn are good friends, but I don’t believe in nepotism and I want to ensure that you will be a good fit for this firm.”
“Cry me a river.” I mumbled under my breath, even though what I really wanted to say was shut the fuck up. “What’s your problem with me?”
“No problem.” He said, his eyes hovering close to me as he gazed at me. “But I take my work very seriously and–.”
“And what?” I cut him off. “You don’t think I’ll be good at the job?”
“If I’m honest, then no I don’t.” He shrugged and looked down at my legs. “Way too short.”
“Excuse me?”
“A judge would throw you out of court in a skirt that short.”
“Well, it’s a good thing I’m not going to court then.” I rolled my eyes.
“You’d also get thrown out for your impertinence.”
“You’d get thrown out for being a jackass.” I mumbled.
“You don’t get thrown out of courthouses for that.”
“But you do get thrown out of bedrooms.”
“Thinking of me in your bedroom, huh?” He smirked as he ran his fingers through his short dark hair. “That didn’t take you long.”
“You wish.”
“Not really.” He licked his lips. “I don’t do sloppy seconds.”
“Excuse me?”
“If you banged someone this morning, I’m not interested in getting one in right now?”
“Right now?” My jaw dropped and he smirked at me.
“It’s quite obvious to me that you want me, Ms. Campbell. You wanted me in the elevator and you want me now.” He shrugged. “But I don’t fuck women that–.”
“You listen to me, Mr. Whitlock.” I stepped closer to him and pushed my face up at him. I moved even closer to him, so that I could feel the warmth of his body next to mine. “If, and this is a huge if, I wanted you. I could have you in a heartbeat.” I moved my lips closer to his. “If I wanted you, you would quite literally know it…”
“Oh yeah?” He said. “How?”
I pressed my hand on his shoulder and moved my body up against his. My heart was racing and my legs were trembling slightly. I moved my other arm up so that both arms were now around his neck and I was leaning into him completely. My breasts were pressed up against his hard chest and I could definitely feel something twitching in his pants next to my stomach. I reached my fingers up into his hair and then ran them down the back of his neck.
“This is how you would know…” I stood up my tippytoes and blew whispered into his ear before lightly licking his earlobe and then running my right hand all the way down the side of his body towards his pants. I ran my fingers through my hair and puckered my lips our before bringing them closer to his lips. “There would be absolutely no doubt in your mind.” My lips lightly grazed his as my fingers ran down the front of his pants and I felt his hardness against my fingertips. I gave him one light squeeze and then stepped back. I’d done too good of a job trying to teach him a lesson. I was feeling horny as hell.
Max and I were both breathing heavily as we stood there facing each other and for a moment, I thought he was going to kiss me. My body felt like I was on fire and I knew I was in out of my depth, but I couldn’t help the way my body felt in that moment.
“But I’m not interested,” I said stepping back and taking a deep breath. “I also don’t want to file these stupid folders.” I crossed my arms. “So let me back into the official program or I’m leaving.”
“On one condition.” He said, his eyes never leaving mine.
“What’s that?” I asked, barely able to breathe.
“You introduce me to the man that has the patience to put up with you.” He said with a smirk. “I want to meet the man with the patience of Job.” He laughed. “Cos I have no idea how he deals with you.”
“I don’t know. I…” I mumbled, trying to think fast.
“Don’t worry. I won’t tell him that you grabbed my dick and rubbed yourself all over me.” Max’s eyes twinkled as he gazed at me. “That will remain our little secret.”
I was about to correct him and tell him off, but decided not to. As much as I wanted to push my luck, I really did want this job. “Fine,” I said finally. “I will figure out his availability and schedule. He’s very successful and very busy so I–.”
“I expect to see him at the end of week party on Friday.” Max cut me off. “That is if you want this internship and if he actually exists.”
“He exists.” I glared at him. “You are one of the most insufferable rude men I’ve ever met in my life.”
“Get used to it hon. If you want to be in law, you’re going to have to deal with a thousand me’s.” He said with a laugh. “It’s time to toughen up.”
“Whatever,” I mumbled under my breath. “And fine, he loves me, so if I ask him to be there on Friday, he will be there.”
“Good.” He said with a smile. “Oh and by the way.”
“Yes?”
“If I wanted to seduce you, you would know as well.” He said, suddenly grabbing my hands and pulling me towards the side of the room. He pushed me up against the wall and then grabbed my waist and lifted me up.
“What are you doing?” I gasped as I felt his hands on my ass.
“Showing you what I’d do if I wanted you.” He said as he slipped my skirt up my thighs and spread my legs open before pushing himself against me and pressing me against the wall. His right hand ran down the side of my body and lightly grazed my breast before he buried his face in my neck and lightly bit me. His tongue trailed up to my ear as his hardness pressed against my wet panties. “If I wanted you right now, I’d have your panties off and be inside of you.” He whispered in my ear and then started chuckling as he lowered me back down.
He took a step back and winked at me. “Oh and don’t worry, Polly. I won’t tell your boyfriend just how much you wanted me to follow through with those actions.” He grinned and then turned back to the desk. “Put these files away, then you can come back up to the conference room.” He said and then walked out of the room. I stood there, still leaned back against the wall and tried to get my heart to settle down. I wasn’t even sure my brain could process what had just happened, but there were four things that I knew. 1. Max Whitlock was a jerk. 2. I was an idiot. 3. I needed to get laid as quickly as possible and 4. I needed to find a boyfriend for Friday or I was going to end up looking like the huge liar that I was.
